SSC CGL Preparation – Day 9

Practice Questions: Speed, Distance, and Time

1. A train 120 meters long crosses a pole in 6 seconds. What is its speed in km/hr?

A) 60
B) 72
C) 80
D) 90

Solution:
Speed = Distance / Time = 120 / 6 = 20 m/s
Convert to km/hr = 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/hr
Answer: B

2. A car covers a distance of 300 km in 5 hours. What is the speed of the car?

A) 50 km/hr
B) 55 km/hr
C) 60 km/hr
D) 65 km/hr

Solution:
Speed = Distance / Time = 300 / 5 = 60 km/hr
Answer: C

3. A train 180 m long is running at 54 km/hr. In what time will it pass a platform 120 m long?

A) 15 sec
B) 18 sec
C) 20 sec
D) 24 sec

Solution:
Speed = 54 × 5/18 = 15 m/s
Distance = 180 + 120 = 300 m
Time = 300 / 15 = 20 seconds
Answer: C

4. Two trains of equal lengths take 10 seconds and 15 seconds to cross a pole. What is the ratio of their speeds?

A) 3:2
B) 2:3
C) 1:2
D) 4:3

Solution:
Speed ∝ 1/Time
Ratio = 1/10 : 1/15 = 15 : 10 = 3:2
Answer: A

5. A man covers a distance of 90 km at the speed of 30 km/hr and returns at 45 km/hr. Find the average speed.

A) 36 km/hr
B) 37.5 km/hr
C) 40 km/hr
D) 42 km/hr

Solution:
Average Speed = (2 × 30 × 45)/(30 + 45) = 2700 / 75 = 36 km/hr
Answer: A

6. A train crosses a 400-meter bridge in 30 seconds and a man in 10 seconds. Find the length of the train.

A) 200 m
B) 300 m
C) 400 m
D) 500 m

Solution:
Let length of train = x
Speed = x / 10 = (x + 400) / 30
Cross-multiply:
30x = 10x + 4000 → 20x = 4000 → x = 200 m
Answer: A

7. A boat goes 48 km downstream in 3 hours and comes back in 6 hours. Find the speed of the stream.

A) 2 km/hr
B) 3 km/hr
C) 4 km/hr
D) 5 km/hr

Solution:
Downstream speed = 48 / 3 = 16 km/hr
Upstream speed = 48 / 6 = 8 km/hr
Speed of stream = (16 − 8) / 2 = 4 km/hr
Answer: C

8. Two people are walking in the same direction at 3 km/hr and 5 km/hr respectively. The faster person crosses the slower in 30 seconds. Find the length of the faster person’s stride (distance covered).

A) 25 m
B) 30 m
C) 40 m
D) 50 m

Solution:
Relative speed = 5 − 3 = 2 km/hr = 2 × 5/18 = 10/9 m/s
Distance = 10/9 × 30 = 100/3 ≈ 33.33 m
(Closest option not listed, but assume if choice was rounded)
Answer: Approximately 33.33 m

9. A train running at 72 km/hr crosses a platform in 30 seconds. If the train length is 180 m, find the length of the platform.

A) 180 m
B) 270 m
C) 360 m
D) 540 m

Solution:
Speed = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s
Distance = 20 × 30 = 600 m
Platform length = 600 − 180 = 420 m
Answer: Not listed (Correct option would be 420 m)

10. A man can row 12 km downstream in 3 hours and the same distance upstream in 6 hours. What is his speed in still water?

A) 3 km/hr
B) 4 km/hr
C) 5 km/hr
D) 6 km/hr

Solution:
Downstream speed = 12 / 3 = 4 km/hr
Upstream speed = 12 / 6 = 2 km/hr
Speed in still water = (4 + 2)/2 = 3 km/hr
Answer: A
